My Bacterial Vaginosis Story

YES. Although in most BV causes no complications, it can cause serious problems long term if it is not treated, especially if you are pregnant.

• There is an increased risk of miscarriage during pregnancy or premature delivery (before 37th week).

• There is a risk of BV infecting the uterus and fallopian tube which can lead to Pelvic inflammatory disease or PID. This is an infection that can affect a woman's uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.

• Higher risk of getting other STDs. Having BV can increase the chances of getting other STDs, such as Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV. Having BV increases the chances that an HIV-infected woman can pass HIV to her sex partner

• It can also cause discomfort during sex which can lead to high anxiety and low self esteem. You can easily lose your self confidence and develop problems with body image. Most women fear having sex as it might trigger repeated attacks of BV.

Therefore as previously stated, although having BV does not necessarily mean you will develop serious complication; if you get repeated attacks then it’s worth treating with natural remedies, even if it’s just so you can get a decent sex life!
